Lightning Conductor
Surge Arrester Operating Principal
The Pulsar emits a high voltage signal with a clearly determined controlled frequency and ampliyude, allowing the early formation of the upward leader to the tip and its continuous propagation. It draws the down leader it needs from the electronic field existing during the storm. After the lightning capture, it channels  it to the down conductor towards ground where it will be scattered.
The lightning stroke begins the formation inside the storm cloud of a tracer which proceeds in hops toward the ground: this is the downward tracer.

As the tracer from the clouds nears the ground, the ionization due to the corona effect continues to develop until its transformation in an upward tracer on striking structure or objects on the ground . This is What happens in particular at the lightning conductor tip.

Spreading in the direction of the cloud, this upward discharge creates a sufficient field to bend the trajectory of the downward tracer.

The upward tracer then joins the downward tracer. The lightning stroke then manifests itself and the lightning current percolates into the ground.

Surge Arrester

Its Function is to channel lightning and to allow the generated currents to flow so that they do not penetrate into the structure to be protected. The word " Structure" includes buildings, towers, masts, antennas, chimneys sheds, etc.
The Lightning conductor or the mesh enclosure alone do not provide sufficient protection of electrical equipment against over voltages. Lightning arresters must be installed as well. Lightning arresters can be used without any lightning conductors on sites where direct strokes are very unlikely to happen. When lightning strikes cables and transmission lines (H.F. Coaxial Cables, Telecommunication lines, Power Cables) a voltage surge is propagated and may reach upstream or downstream equipment.

This voltage surge can also be generated by induction due to the electromagnetic radiation of the lightning flash. The consequences can be multiple : premature ageing of the components, printed circuit track destruction, component plating destruction, equipment failure, data loss, programs hang up, line damage, etc.
It is therefore necessary to protect equipment likely to be sruck through the use of surge arrester.
